Hoopoes and red squirrels
Hoopoes are regular Spring visitors. The huge, heraldic crested Hoopoe, looking like a French tapestry, hops about fearlessly in front of the house, looking for insects under the trees. Nothing fazes him, and if disturbed by humans or the odd cat he spreads his golden crest and stalks away, slowly.
You could mistake him for a Jay, with black and white striped wings and tail, but his head and body are golden. He’s worth coming to see!!
Another (permanent) inhabitant is the beautiful little red squirrel, very much alive and well and living in the pine woods beside our land (please someone tell Prince Charles).
For us ordinary mortals, there are scarlet poppies and blue iris by the roadside, shouting at the sun in the clear blue sky. The pool is a pale blue beckoning orb, which you can fall into with such pleasure after a long journey.
This is May and June in the Southern Drôme, before the sun starved crowds arrive The Markets are relatively peaceful but full of marvellous produce- our strawberries, our melons, our asparagus, soon there’ll be cherries, and apricots ( you can see them ripening in the orchards round about us ), and a giant plus, for those who like wine, we are surrounded on all sides by the vineyards of the Southern Rhône and the Côtes du Ventoux. And the roads are still uncrowded. Look forward to seeing you !!
